The story of how I got great results within 2 weeks without changing my diet

It got to the point I was down on myself, almost in tears and was considering giving up on my goal of completing my first marathon.
I have been reasonably fit most of my life and although I hadn't done a lot of long distance running, I was always a good running and as part of turning 35 I set myself a goal of completing my first marathon.
It started well with my shorter distance training runs. Some sore calf muscles, but generally feeling good.
However, as my training runs started to get longer and I had to start getting more serious about my nutrition to allow me to keep increasing my distances and training hours. Although the running part was great and I loved getting in the zone of running, the hard part for me was my meals and knowing what I should be eating and worrying how much of what I should be having.
That meant I needed to plan my meals on the weekend, making sure I was eating lots of colours to get the nutrients I needed. It also meant I was unable to really enjoy the foods and drink I really liked having, like pizzas etc.
So I found myself craving these foods and then I starting to snack or even binge on the 'bad' stuff and I progressively would find it harder to stick to my strict eating and it got me to a point where I was struggling on my runs and I stopped seeing any improvement in my training because I wasn't doing the right things for my body and so my body wasn't doing the right thing for me. I only had a few months to go before the event and I was feeling so bad that I started to re-think my goal and was thinking about quitting.
After one particular bad training session, where I walked the last few kilometres of my training run, was when my wife stepped in.
